Bully Sticks 101: Choosing the Right Size and Chewing Safely

Bully sticks are one of the most popular chews for dogs, and for good reason. They are made from a single animal protein, they are highly digestible for most dogs, and many dogs will happily work on one for a long time. Choosing the right one and supervising chew time keeps the experience safe and fun.

What is a bully stick?

A bully stick is a single-ingredient chew made from beef, water buffalo or pork pizzle that is cleaned, stretched and slowly dried or baked. Unlike rawhide, bully sticks are a muscle protein that most dogs digest well. Pork versions tend to be a bit softer, while water buffalo sticks are dense and long-lasting.

Choosing the right size

The most important safety rule is to choose a stick that is too big to swallow whole.

  • 5 to 6 inch sticks work well for small and medium dogs, and as a quicker chew for bigger dogs under supervision.
  • 9 inch sticks suit medium and large dogs and last longer.
  • 12 inch sticks are a good fit for large and power chewers who need a longer, more challenging chew.

When in doubt, size up. A longer stick gives your dog more to hold and gives you more time before it becomes small enough to be a choking risk.

Regular vs. low-odor

Bully sticks naturally have a smell, which many dogs love and many humans do not. Low-odor bully sticks are cleaned and dried in a way that reduces that smell. They are a nice choice if your dog chews indoors, on the couch or in the car.

Safe chewing rules

  1. Always supervise. Stay nearby, especially the first few times your dog has a new chew.
  2. Take it away when it gets small. Once the stick is short enough that it could be swallowed (about 2 inches or less for most dogs), replace it. A bully stick holder lets your dog safely enjoy the stick down to the end.
  3. Mind the calories. Bully sticks are rich. Count them as part of your dog's daily treat allowance and adjust meals if you give chews often.
  4. Introduce slowly. Start with short chew sessions so your dog's stomach can adjust.
  5. Offer fresh water. Chewing is thirsty work.

Benefits of chewing

Chewing is a natural behavior. A good chew can help keep your dog busy, relieve boredom, and give anxious or energetic dogs a calm outlet. Regular chewing can also help scrape away some surface buildup on teeth, though it is not a replacement for brushing or veterinary dental care.
